UPON STORMING FROM his parentâs house, Ross had wanted nothing more than to hear Hunterâs voice or, better yet, to meet up with him and fall into his comforting arms. However, he had resisted the initial impulse and forced his itching fingers away from the phone in his jacket pocket. If he called Hunter now heâd blub and rant, and he didnât want to inflict that on anyone, his lover least of all. Instead, he decided to let off steam with a long walk before heading back to his flat. He turned away from his usual route home and headed north. Fifteen minutes later he reached Holland Park.
Something about Holland Park had always appealed to him. Perhaps it was the fact that it was less well known and therefore less traversed than its famous neighbour. Or maybe it was simply because heâd always rather liked that song Michael Ball had sung about the park. Not that heâd admit that to anyone. Well, he might confess to Hunter, but only after heâd sworn him to secrecy.
Ross reached the gate and cursed out loud when he realised that the park was already shut for the night. The second shut door of the evening. It was only now that he found his entry barred that Ross realised how much heâd been relying on the familiar pathways to ease his troubled mind. Now he would have nothing to divert his thoughts from memories of the looks on his parentsâ faces. Faces he may never see again. Hunter or his parents. Why did it have to be a choice? Why could he not have both?
His eyes began to itch, and he rubbed at them with the back of his hand. He gripped the wrought-iron gate for a moment and then turned away. Not wanting to pass anywhere near his parentsâ house, he took a circuitous route home. By the time he arrived at his front door, it was close to midnight.
Once inside, he kicked off his shoes in the hallway and traipsed into the bedroom, where he stripped, flung his clothing in all directions, not caring where the garments landed, and climbed into bed. With layers of sheets and blankets and his genuine goose-feather duvet, Ross was in no danger of being cold, yet he shivered as he lay there, the full repercussions of the evening robbing him of rest.
His parents had effectively disowned him.
No. Correction. His father had disowned him.
For all her shock and worry, Ross knew that his mother would come to accept his feelings in time, but heâd never seen his father that angry, that implacable. Not even when he first learnt that Ross was gay had he reacted with such venom. Though perhaps this was nothing but a delayed response to that initial revelation.
Ross sensed burning bridges; he would have sworn that he could feel the very heat of the flames against his skin. Had he done wrong? Should he have held his tongue and gone along with his fatherâs plans? He could have waited for a better time to break the news about Hunter.
